Why do you need an Editor?
The job of an editor is to make sure that the writer communicates clearly
to his readers. There are many levels of editing -- from the cosmetic to the complete overhaul and in between.
Writers should certainly self-edit. But, as a rule, the writer is too
close to his own work to see objectively. He knows what he wants to say and beleives that this is what he has written.
Unfortunately, even though it makes sense to him, sometimes that is not what the reader 'hears'.
But, when an editor reads this work for the first time, there may be things
that stand out like a pink bear up a tree.
If a writer belongs to a writer's group, that may be an avenue for some valuable
critiques. However, a full review may not be possible due to time constraints or skill levels.
Family and friends are always willing to be of assistance but are generally
too supportive to actually provide any pointers. Their focus lies is in the encouragement department --- 'that's
really good!'
If, as a writer, you want to put your best foot forward, Vi can enhance your
professionalism through objective editing.
Types of Editing
- Substantive/Structural Editing
- Copy Editing
- Proofreading
Substantive or Structural Editing:
This is a complete overhaul. It can involve reorganizing sections of the
work and/or rewritng to clarify and create a better flow. It also incorporates sentence structure, grammar, spelling,
punctuation and transitions. Depending on the project, it could also include the proper usage of foot notes, references
and additional research. Often changes are extensive and are done in concert with the writer.
Copy Editing:
This form of editing assumes that the work is structurally sound and concerns
itself with style and internal consistency and the mechanics of grammar, spelling, punctuation and phrasing. Errors
are corrected and the work is polished.
Proofreading:
This stage is offerred to well-written and well-edited works.
It is the final once-over to ensure that no spelling error has been overlooked, that it is properly punctuated and there are
no typos.
